ADELAIDE, Australia, 29 May 2026 — AMPYR Australia (AMPYR) welcomes the South Australian Government’s announcement of successful projects under Tender 1 of the Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism (FERM), with the Northern Battery selected to deliver long-duration firm capacity for the state. AMPYR has now executed the Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism Agreement (FERMA) and is progressing the project towards a Q4 2026 construction start.
Located at the former Northern Power Station site in Port Augusta, the Northern Battery will provide a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an output capacity of 270 MW. The project will play a critical role in strengthening South Australia’s electricity system and supporting its renewable energy future, with the capacity to power approximately 45,000 homes during peak demand periods when renewable generation is low.
The project will provide firm, dispatchable capacity when it is needed most, supporting system reliability and enabling more wind and solar energy to be delivered to South Australian homes and businesses. It will also transform the former Northern Power Station into a modern clean energy asset, repurposing existing infrastructure to continue powering the state using new technology.
The Northern Battery is on track to commence construction in Q4 2026 with major works contracts expected to be awarded in the coming months and commercial operations anticipated in Q2 2028.
AMPYR is pleased to be partnering with Green Gold Energy (GGE), who have been developing the project since 2023 and will continue to support delivery through its deep local knowledge and established community and stakeholder relationships.
AMPYR has a demonstrated track record of delivering complex energy projects in Australia and internationally, including the Bulabul 1 BESS, a 300 MW / 600 MWh BESS project currently under construction in NSW.
AMPYR CEO Alex Wonhas said: “South Australia is leading the world’s transition to a high-renewables grid, and long-duration storage is the missing piece. AMPYR’s Northern Battery will deliver that storage at scale — firming renewable supply, strengthening system security, and supporting more affordable power for consumers. The SA Government’s FERM gave industry the certainty to commit, and with our contract now executed we’re moving into delivery, with construction partners to be appointed in the coming months. This will be a landmark project for the state, which will also deliver long-term benefits for the Port Augusta community.”
AMPYR will invest over $2 million in the community over the 20-year life of the Northern Battery to ensure the benefits of the project are shared with the local community. As a first step, AMPYR has recently launched its Northern Battery Community Fund, with an initial $42,000 invested directly into Port Augusta, supporting 10 local organisations across environmental education, cultural heritage, youth sport and essential community infrastructure.
The project will also create local jobs during construction and deliver long-term economic benefits to the region. AMPYR is engaging closely with Port Augusta Council, the community and Traditional Owners to ensure the project delivers enduring social and economic value.
