Reporting Manager

Principal Engineer – AMPYR Australia

Overview

The Project Engineer provides broad, hands-on engineering support across the full asset lifecycle including development, construction and operations for AMPYR Australia’s energy storage portfolio. This spans the utility-scale fleet (the 300MW / 600MWh Bulabul 1 project and the broader 2,500MW+ utility energy storage pipeline) and the AMPYR Distributed Energy (ADE) portfolio of 60 x 5MW distributed BESS sites. Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the role works alongside the development, delivery, grid, asset management and commercial teams to carry technical workstreams from early feasibility and design, through construction and commissioning, and into operations and performance optimisation.

The role builds AMPYR’s in-house engineering capability and technical continuity across the lifecycle, ensuring that the decisions, assumptions and learnings made in development are carried through delivery and into operations. It provides the connective engineering support that protects design intent, performance guarantees, grid-compliance outcomes and HSSE standards as projects move between phases and teams, reducing reliance on external consultants and improving the repeatability of AMPYR’s delivery model across a growing multi-gigawatt pipeline.

Our Company

AGP Sustainable Real Assets (AGP) is a global asset management group, investing in, developing and operating sustainable infrastructure.

AGP focuses on deploying capital into Platforms, Businesses and Assets focused around three investment themes: Energy, Digital and Real Estate.

AGP’s head office is in Singapore with operations in Australia, UK, Europe, US and India; a rapidly expanding organisation with over 700 employees.

Each AGP platform, business and asset is to be measured and monitored against the positive contribution they make to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and how they contribute to a net zero GHG emissions future.

Among its various investment platforms, AGP has established AMPYR Energy (AMPYR) which develops, owns and operates renewable energy assets around the world. AMPYR Australia is AMPYR’s Australian business.

AMPYR Australia:

  • Is constructing the 300 MW / 600 MWh Bulabul 1 BESS project along with a rapidly growing pipeline of more than 2, 500 MW of utility energy storage projects.
  • Owns a 23MW portfolio of C&I solar assets across 130+ sites and is developing a 300MW portfolio of distributed BESS assets (AMPYR Distributed Energy or ADE), comprising 60 x 5MW battery sites with all sites planned for deployment by mid-2028.

AMPYR is committed to conducting its business consistent with its values and expects team members to be aligned with the AMPYR values of Innovation, Empowerment, and Integrity.

Responsibilities

Development Phase Support

  • Provide engineering input to site feasibility, technology selection and concept and preliminary design for utility-scale and distributed BESS, including layout, single-line diagrams, and civil, electrical and connection scope.
  • Support preparation of technical specifications, scopes of work and tender documentation for EPC, Balance of Plant (BOP) and equipment-supply packages, and assist with technical evaluation of bids.
  • Support grid-connection applications and the connection process, including data provision to the Network Service Provider (NSP) and AEMO, preliminary Generator Performance Standards (GPS) development, and coordination of power-system studies with consultants.
  • Contribute technical scope, quantities and risk inputs to investment cases and DevEx and CapEx budgets, and support technical due diligence on new sites and acquisitions.
  • Maintain the design basis and technical-assumptions documentation so that development decisions remain traceable into construction and operations.

Construction and Commissioning Support

  • Provide owner’s engineering support during construction, reviewing contractor design submissions, inspection and test plans (ITPs), method statements and as-built documentation against the technical specification, NER and AEMO requirements.
  • Support on-site oversight and witnessing of inspections, factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), and cold and hot commissioning hold points, working alongside senior engineers and the delivery team.
  • Track defects, non-conformances and punch-list items and follow up with EPC and BOP contractors to support timely close-out before handover.
  • Support staged energisation, switching and isolation planning and safe systems of work, and assist with verification of performance guarantees — capacity, round-trip efficiency, response and thermal stability — against contracted and GPS requirements.
  • Assist with GPS compliance and hold-point (R1/R2/R3) testing, data collection and model validation, and with clearing connection and registration hold points with the NSP and AEMO.

Operations and Asset Performance Support

  • Support the technical handover of completed projects to the Asset Management and Operations team, including as-built documentation, O&M manuals, warranty and defect registers, spares and performance baselines.
  • Provide engineering support to operating assets, including investigation and resolution of defects, performance shortfalls and availability issues through the defects-liability and warranty period and beyond.
  • Analyse operating data across the BESS, power conversion systems, power plant controller and SCADA to identify performance, degradation and reliability trends, and support optimisation, augmentation and lifecycle-planning decisions.
  • Support ongoing connection-agreement, metering, DUID, market and FCAS compliance obligations, and coordinate with the asset management and trading teams on technical matters affecting dispatch and revenue.
  • Feed operational lessons back into AMPYR’s design and specification standards to improve future projects.

Engineering Standards, Grid and HSSE (Cross-Phase)

  • Help develop and maintain AMPYR’s technical standards, design basis documents, and specification and ITP templates for repeatable application across the pipeline.
  • Act as a consistent technical point of contact across phases, supporting interface management between the development, delivery, grid, asset management and commercial teams.
  • Champion HSSE across design and site activities, including safety-in-design, electrical safety, and switching and isolation discipline.
  • Support the engineering aspects of NER, AEMO and connection-agreement compliance throughout the asset lifecycle.

Reporting, Governance and Continuous Improvement

  • Provide accurate and timely technical reporting on design, construction, commissioning, defect and performance status to the Principal Engineer and project governance forums.
  • Capture lessons learned and contribute to AMPYR’s engineering procedures, technical standards and repeatable delivery model.
