Overview

The HSSE Manager is accountable for health, safety and environmental governance across AMPYR Australia’s development, construction and operating portfolio.

This role is responsible for establishing, implementing and continually improving HSSE strategy, management systems, risk controls and assurance processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, investor expectations and AGP Group minimum standards.

The role provides both strategic leadership and practical delivery across a diverse and growing portfolio, with a particular focus on utility-scale BESS, distributed energy assets and operational solar sites.

The role requires regular travel to development, construction and operational sites across Australia, approximately 40-50% of the time.

Among its various investment platforms, AGP has established AMPYR Energy (AMPYR) which develops, owns and operates renewable energy assets around the world. AMPYR Australia is AMPYR’s Australian business.

AMPYR Australia:

  • Is constructing the 300 MW / 600 MWh Bulabul 1 BESS project along with a rapidly growing pipeline of more than 2, 500 MW of utility energy storage projects.
  • Owns a 23MW portfolio of C&I solar assets across 130+ sites and is developing a 300MW portfolio of distributed BESS assets (AMPYR Distributed Energy or ADE), comprising 60 x 5MW battery sites with all sites planned for deployment by mid-2028.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the entity-wide HSSE strategy for AMPYR Australia, aligned with AGP Group requirements, regulatory obligations and business objectives.
  • Maintain and continuously improve AMPYR Australia’s HSSE management framework, standards, procedures and governance processes.
  • Provide trusted HSSE leadership to the COO, Board and Executive Committee through clear reporting, risk visibility and pragmatic recommendations.
  • Foster a strong, proactive HSSE culture across development, construction and operations, embedding risk ownership and continuous improvement across the business.
  • Lead HSSE risk management across the portfolio, ensuring critical risks are identified, assessed, controlled and reviewed.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Commonwealth and State HSSE legislation, approval conditions, internal standards and relevant international frameworks including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
  • Lead incident notification, statutory reporting and regulator interface where required.
  • Lead HSSE input across the full project lifecycle for BESS and other assets, including development, design review, construction, commissioning, energisation, operations and decommissioning.
  • Ensure robust controls are in place for key BESS and electrical hazards including thermal runaway, fire, arc flash, HV interfaces, switching, isolation, stored energy and contractor work in live or high-risk environments.
  • Support safe operational readiness for new assets, including verification of critical controls, emergency arrangements, training, competency and documentation prior to energisation and handover.
  • Own the contractor HSSE assurance framework, including prequalification, onboarding, mobilisation, monitoring, field verification and performance review.
  • Ensure principal contractors, subcontractors, OEMs, service providers and consultants understand and meet AMPYR’s HSSE requirements.
  • Lead HSSE incident management processes, including investigation, root cause analysis, corrective actions, lessons learned and trend analysis.
  • Ensure site-specific emergency preparedness and response arrangements are established, maintained and regularly tested, including readiness for BESS fire and thermal runaway scenarios.
  • Oversee environmental compliance across the portfolio, including approval conditions, environmental management plans, waste and hazardous materials controls, spill prevention and incident response.
  • Track, analyse and report HSSE leading and lagging indicators, trends and key risks across the AMPYR Australia portfolio.
  • Design and deliver the annual HSSE assurance and audit program.
  • Oversee environmental compliance across the portfolio, including approval conditions, environmental management plans, waste and hazardous materials controls, spill prevention and incident response.
  • Track, analyse and report HSSE leading and lagging indicators, trends and key risks across the AMPYR Australia portfolio.
  • Design and deliver the annual HSSE assurance and audit program.
  • Drive practical continuous improvement in systems, reporting and field performance, including appropriate use of AI, digital tools, automation and data insights.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years’ HSSE experience in renewable energy, BESS, HV electrical infrastructure, construction, industrial or comparable high-risk environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or materially improving HSSE systems across multiple projects, sites or operating assets.
  • Strong working knowledge of Australian HSE legislation, together with relevant management system standards and good industry practice.
  • Experience working across development, construction and/or operating environments, with the ability to adapt HSSE approaches to different lifecycle stages.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing principal contractors, subcontractors and service providers to achieve strong HSSE performance.
  • Experience partnering with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, procurement and project delivery.
  • Strong reporting, organisational and stakeholder-management capability.
  • Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel regularly to site.

Desirable

  • ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 internal or lead auditor qualification.
  • Formal incident investigation training such as ICAM or equivalent.
  • AIHS membership or equivalent professional membership.
  • Construction induction (White Card).
  • Experience across multi-site or portfolio-based operations.
