Trading Operations Analyst – Electrical Engineering

AMPYR Australia:

• Is constructing the 300 MW / 600 MWh Bulabul 1 BESS project along with a rapidly growing pipeline of more than 2, 500 MW of utility energy storage projects.
• Owns a 23MW portfolio of C&I solar assets across 130+ sites and is developing a 300MW portfolio of distributed BESS assets (AMPYR Distributed Energy or ADE), comprising 60 x 5MW battery sites with all sites planned for deployment by mid-2028.

Responsibilities

Asset & Electrical Engineering Performance Management

• Monitor day-to-day BESS operational, electrical and commercial performance, including cycling, degradation, asset health, electrical operating limits, equipment availability and force majeure conditions.
• Maintain performance monitoring dashboards and ensure accurate data inputs from SCADA, AEMO, OEM, network, asset management and trading systems.
• Review, maintain and advise on master asset and contract data parameters, ensuring alignment with technical operating limits, grid connection constraints and offtake obligations.
• Support the determination and review of the type and arrangement of circuits, transformers, circuit-breakers, switchgear, transmission and distribution interface equipment, connection infrastructure and other electrical equipment as they relate to operational readiness, asset limitations, trading constraints and maintenance planning.
• Interpret technical specifications, single-line diagrams, drawings, standards, grid connection requirements and electricity regulations relating to electric power equipment and use, translating requirements into operating, trading, reporting and compliance processes.
• Support weekly and monthly reporting cycles on asset performance, equipment availability, trading performance, market outcomes and financial KPIs.

Market Operations

• Monitor spot market outcomes on a day-to-day basis and identify trends and changing market conditions to inform trading strategy.
• Prepare and facilitate weekly meetings with internal and external stakeholders to present asset performance, electrical operating constraints, market dynamics and key risks.
• Contribute to the development of risk assessment methodologies and internal governance frameworks, including risks arising from grid events, forced outages, equipment limitations and maintenance windows.
• Optimise asset availability with offtakers and partners given prevailing market conditions, equipment capacity, outage plans and operating modes.

Operations, Maintenance & Contractor Interface

• Supervise and coordinate operational performance and maintenance interfaces for BESS, power conversion systems, transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems, connection infrastructure and related industrial plant, working through O&M contractors, OEMs, network service providers and asset managers.
• Monitor planned and unplanned outages, defects, alarms, equipment limitations and force majeure conditions, escalating where operational, safety or commercial impacts are identified.
• Support commissioning-to-operations transition, post-COD performance testing, operational readiness reviews and maintenance schedules for energy storage assets and associated electrical plant.

Compliance

• Work closely with legal and compliance teams to ensure operations are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements, including NEM/AEMO requirements, grid connection obligations, technical standards and internal risk controls.
• Ensure compliance with internal risk framework and implement changes to risk reporting as needed.
• Own key datasets and ensure reliability of data sources supporting asset operations, maintenance coordination and reporting.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Educational Background

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. Equivalent quantitative qualifications may be considered where supported by relevant power systems and energy asset operations experience.

Professional Experience

• 3-4 years’ experience in renewable energy or BESS asset operations, power systems, electrical asset management, trading operations or market analytics.
• Experience in operating and trading systems for real-time grid-connected energy assets, including dispatching batteries, hydro or gas assets.
• Experience working with SCADA data, grid connection constraints, NEM/AEMO processes and equipment operating parameters for energy storage or generation assets.

Skills & Knowledge

• Good understanding of electrical power systems and energy technologies, including battery energy storage, solar, wind, hydro and related grid connection assets.
• Ability to interpret electrical specifications, single-line diagrams, technical drawings, operational data, standards and regulations relating to electric power equipment and use.
• Working knowledge of BESS architecture, inverters, transformers, circuit-breakers, switchgear, protection and control systems, telemetry and grid connection interfaces.
• Intuitive understanding of NEM market operations, market participant bidding behaviour patterns and spot market dynamics.
• Highly commercially focussed, with the ability to connect asset physical conditions and electrical operating limits to financial performance.
• Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple reporting cycles and stakeholder requirements.
• Excellent communication skills. Able to produce clear, accurate reports aligned with technical, contractual and regulatory frameworks.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, regulatory bodies, O&M contractors, OEMs, network service providers and partners.
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills required; familiarity with SQL, Python and Power BI, or similar tools, is a bonus.
